About Yak&Brew – Honoring Nepali and Himalayan Homebrews

From Himalayan Roots to a Global Quest

Dawa’s journey began in the shadow of the Himalayas, where the Gurkha spirit has roared for over 200 years, forging a legacy of unyielding courage. Born in Nepal and raised in the misty foothills of Darjeeling and Sikkim, he grew up immersed in vibrant traditions, sipping Tongba, a cornerstone of the Nepali homebrew tradition, during family gatherings and festival nights, and listening to tales told by firelight.


The smoky, earthy warmth of Tongba carried the voices of Sherpa climbers conquering icy peaks and Limbu brewmasters preserving ancient knowledge. 


For Dawa, Tongba wasn’t just a drink, it was the pulse of Nepal, alive with the wild heartbeat of the mountains. Driven by that primal connection, he set out to share its magic. After years of brewing, experimenting with millet blends and fermentation techniques, Yak&Brew was born - a fusion of Himalayan tradition and American craft brewing creativity.


Our mission is to ignite a global passion for Himalayan brewing, calling bold explorers to taste Nepal’s wild soul. Every sip carries the thrill of discovery, the resilience of the Gurkhas, and the adventurous spirit of the highlands.

We begin with premium red and brown finger millet, honoring the brewing traditions passed down through Limbu generations. Our natural yeast starters, refined through years of experimentation, trigger a fermentation process that balances ancient authenticity with modern precision, blending Himalayan ritual with craft brewing grit.


Yak&Brew traditional wooden Tongba vessel and bamboo straw brings the full experience to life. Pour in the Tongba, sip the tangy, earthy brew, refill with hot water, and feel the mountains in your hands. Each wooden Tongba vessel is handcrafted by Nepali artisans, pulsing with cultural heritage and supporting the communities that inspire our mission. From harvest to final assembly, every step is a tribute to the Himalayas - bold, raw, and unforgettable.
