Welcome to Yak&Brew - your passport to brewing Tongba, Nepal’s ancient fermented millet drink, right from your kitchen.
We’re a team of passionate makers, travelers, and homebrew nerds who fell in love with Tongba’s warm, communal spirit and deep cultural roots. But outside of Nepal, this rich tradition has been nearly impossible to experience - until now.
Yak&Brew introduces the first-ever DIY Tongba Kit to the U.S., designed for modern brewers who crave something bold, cultural, and different. Each Tongba brewing kit includes heirloom-style millet, traditional-inspired marcha yeast, bamboo-style straws, and simple step-by-step instructions - everything you need to brew Tongba at home.
Choose from our three distinct styles:
• Marcha Style - tangy and traditional
• Khukuri Dry - earthy, dry, and rustic
• Easy Everest - clean, crisp, and refreshing
Every sip is a connection - to the mountains, the makers, and the memories.
Yak&Brew is more than a Nepali homebrew kit. It’s a cultural invitation, one steaming cup of millet beer at a time.
We’re on a mission to preserve Nepalese heritage through hands-on brewing supporting local suppliers in NC and across the U.S. while helping curious brewers rediscover an ancient, bold, and slightly funky tradition.
Because bringing Tongba to American kitchens?
That’s one small sip for you, one giant pour for Himalayan culture.
Join us on this flavorful journey as we brew, sip, and connect - just like families have done for generations across the highlands. And if you ever need company or tips, pull up a virtual stool over at r/YakAndBrew - we’re building a warm, welcoming brewing community one cup at a time.
Yak&Brew began with one person’s craving - not just for flavor, but for home.
I’m Dawa, a Nepal born entrepreneur, full time software engineer, and part time brewer (aka weekend fermentation enthusiast). Like many immigrants, I missed the small things: the smell of steamed millet, the way Tongba warms your hands, and the shared ritual of sipping, laughing, and refilling.
After years of hacking together homemade brews like I debug code - late at night and with questionable results - I realized there was no easy way to make authentic Tongba in the U.S. So I set out to fix that. Not just for myself, but for anyone curious about Himalayan culture, fermentation, and good vibes.
With help from local suppliers in North Carolina and yeast wizards who understood the heart of traditional marcha, I built something I wish I’d had years ago: the first DIY Tongba kit for the U.S. Now anyone can brew Tongba at home using heirloom-style millet and wild-inspired yeast - no liquor license, no spreadsheets.
Yak&Brew is more than a business. It’s a bridge - from my roots to your glass, from an ancient Himalayan drink to a new generation of homebrewers. So steep it, sip it, and let the fermentation fun begin.
