About Yak&Brew

Himalayan Brewing Kits & Tradition

Yak&Brew was created to share traditional Himalayan fermented drinks like Tongba and Chhaang in a way that is respectful, accessible, and rooted in culture.

These drinks are not trends. They are living traditions that have been brewed and shared for generations across Nepal, Darjeeling, Sikkim, Tibet, and Bhutan. Yak&Brew exists to help people experience those traditions at home while honoring where they come from.

From Himalayan Roots to a Modern Craft

Yak&Brew’s founder, Dawa, was raised between Nepal, Darjeeling, and Sikkim. Tongba was part of everyday life there. It was shared during festivals, cold evenings, and long conversations. It was not just a drink, but a way people connected.

Years later, that experience became the foundation for Yak&Brew. The goal was simple: create home brewing kits that stay true to Himalayan methods while making the process approachable for modern kitchens.

After extensive testing, experimentation, and learning from traditional practices, Yak&Brew kits were developed to balance authenticity, safety, and ease of use.

Brewing the Himalayas at Home

Tongba and Chhaang are fermented grain drinks with deep roots in Himalayan communities. They have long been part of agricultural cycles, celebrations, and daily life in high altitude regions.

Tongba is traditionally brewed using 100 percent millet. Chhaang is traditionally brewed using a blend of millet and rice, typically in equal proportions.

Yak&Brew kits are designed as an entry point into these traditions.

Each kit begins with carefully sourced grains. Tongba kits use organic red finger millet. Chhaang kits use a balanced blend of millet and rice. Our fermentation blends are inspired by traditional Himalayan starters such as Murcha and are made using FDA compliant ingredients in a food safe environment.

We source grains and herbal components with care, prioritizing organic and sustainably grown ingredients from Nepal, India, and the United States. All preparation follows strict standards for quality and safety.

Brewing at home is not just about making a drink. It is about participating in a practice that values patience, sharing, and community.

Brew, Connect, and Give Back

Yak&Brew was built around the idea that brewing brings people together. Family, friends, and community have always been at the center of Himalayan drinking culture.

We also believe in giving back to the communities that inspire us. That is why we launched Yak for a Cause, a space dedicated to highlighting nonprofit organizations we support. These include initiatives focused on education, cultural preservation, shelter, and community support in both South Asia and the United States.

We feature a small number of organizations at a time and rotate them as we grow. If you know a nonprofit doing meaningful work in these areas, we welcome recommendations.
