About Yak&Brew | Himalayan Brewing Kits & Tradition

From Himalayan Roots to a Global Craft Movement

Yak&Brew was born in the shadow of the Himalayas, where the Himalayan brewing tradition runs deep and ancient brews tell stories by firelight. Dawa, our founder, was raised between Nepal, Darjeeling, and Sikkim, sipping Tongba on misty festival nights and listening to tales of Sherpa climbers and Limbu brewmasters. For him, Tongba wasn’t just a drink; it was the heartbeat of home.

Years later, that same spirit fuels Yak&Brew - a bold fusion of Himalayan heritage and American craft brewing. After countless batches, wild Nepali fermentation experiments, and late night taste tests, our DIY kits bring the mountains to your kitchen. No sherpa required.

Craft the Wild: Brew the Himalayas at Home

Tongba and Chhaang are more than just brews. They are living traditions with roots stretching back thousands of years in the high Himalayan settlements of Nepal, Sikkim, Darjeeling, Tibet, and Bhutan. These fermented millet drinks have long been part of Himalayan life. From fireside gatherings after harvest to festival toasts beneath starlit skies, they have fueled stories, strengthened bonds, and offered warmth in a rugged landscape.

Our DIY kits are a gateway into that tradition - reimagined for modern hands but grounded in ancient wisdom. Each brew begins with organic red finger millet, a grain cherished by the Limbu and Sherpa communities for generations. Our natural fermentation blend is inspired by traditional Himalayan starters like Murcha, crafted with wild herbs and heritage grains, and made using FDA compliant ingredients in a food safe environment.

We source all herbal components and grain inputs with intention, favoring organic, sustainably grown ingredients from India, Nepal, and the United States, and preparing them under strict standards for purity and safety.

When you brew at home, you are not just making a drink. You are reviving a centuries old ritual - one that honors resilience, resourcefulness, and celebration. From the first pour to the final sip, it is a journey through time, culture, and community.

Join the Legacy: Brew, Connect, Give Back

Yak&Brew was created to bring people together - family, friends, and loved ones - over something meaningful, memorable, and a little wild. Rooted in Himalayan hospitality and fueled by communal ritual, our mission is to make every brew a reason to connect, share, and give.

We have launched Yak for a Cause, a space to highlight the nonprofit organizations we support. From education and cultural preservation in Nepal to shelters and veterans programs in the United States, we believe in giving back to the communities that inspire us.

We plan to feature a few nonprofits at a time, rotating regularly to shine light on as many worthy causes as we can. If you have a favorite charity, especially those focused on shelter, veterans, education, or cultural heritage, we would love to hear from you.

We are also committed to sustainable sourcing, ethical labor, and eco conscious packaging because we owe it to the mountains that made us.

So brew the wild. Pass it on. Be part of the story, one daring sip at a time.
